Each participating country survey a large scale representative sample of at least 1,000 children in each of three school year groups – around the ages of 8, 10 and/or 12.

Phase 1: Preparation of the survey

2016 and 2017 are devoted to the preparation of the survey.
There are three aspects of preparation for the survey in each country: translation and piloting of questionnaires; developing a sampling strategy; and gaining ethical approval.

> Translating the questionnaires

As a first step a deep translation of the questionnaires into the spoken language/s in each country, with careful attention to the culture and context of the country and children is being done. As a second step the translated questionnaires are translated back into English (back-translation).

> Piloting with children

The questionnaires are tested with the children in the cultural context it will be used. This involves testing with children in all three age groups for the survey in order to ensure that the questions are clear and easy to understand and culturally and ethically appropriate. Pilots are been done through cognitive testing with individual children, or by conducting focus groups with children.

> Sampling strategy

Each participant country designs a sampling strategy. The aim of the survey is to achieve, in each participating country, a representative sample of at least 1,000 children in each school year and/or age group included in the survey. The sampling strategy is review and approved by the sample-committee – a panel of sampling experts who review all sampling strategies and provide feedback and support to national research teams.

> Ethics

It is a requirement of participation in the project that the ethical approach receives approval from an appropriate ethics board within the country. This includes: parental consent; children consent (Irrespective of whether parental consent is sought, it is essential that children also are provided with a genuine choice as to whether they take part in the survey); Privacy, confidentiality and anonymity.

Phase 2: Conducting the survey

Data collection started at 2017. Until now, 35 countries have completed data collection from more than 126,000 children.

Phase 3: preparing the database

The teams and the research directors worked on cleaning the data and designing the proper weightings for each country.

Phase 4: Data analyzing and publications
The international database will was ready at May 2020, and will be freely available by July 2021.
The comparative report of initial findings from the international data is available from August 2021 – click here to see the comparative report.
